Languages

French 1

This house group meets fortnightly. Our meetings are conducted in French (as far as possible) and we exchange our news, read from a book and play games.

French 2

The group meets fortnightly. The sessions follow a regular pattern. About half an hour of chat in French and another half hour of grammar following a prescribed course . The rest of the time taken by reading extracts from novels or short stories, watching films or whatever seems appropriate for the day.

French Playreading 1

Our house group meets every fortnight. We read a variety of old and modern plays.

The group is limited to 7 members which we find is the maximum number for comfortable accommodation

French Playreading 2

French Play Reading 2 is a house group meeting fortnightly. We read a range of plays: classical and modern: tragedy, comedy and farce. Most of us read ahead beforehand, with dictionaries, and after reading round the group we discuss both the content and the language of the plays.

Latin 1

Due to a change of circumstances this group will no longer meet until further notice

Latin 2

The stories and exercises in Ecce Romani provide the linguistic basis of our work and, as we follow the life of a Roman Family, afford glimpses into different levels of Roman society in the last quarter of the first century AD. As far as time allows, we shall be considering the contribution of Latin in the development of the English language and literature.

Mither Tongue

The Group meets every four weeks and is principally concerned with the languages and dialects of Scotland though topics often range into other areas of Scottish culture. Members are encouraged to share their experience and knowledge of words and phrases associated with a variety of topics

Russian

This group is running this year and will restart in September 2011

Spanish – Improvers’

Spanish Improvers is now one group which meets weekly at the home of Group Leader Katharine Melville in Birnam.

The group is diverse in experience and knowledge, so sessions are flexible. Most people like to write something for the class.

Grammar, vocabulary and modes of expression are introduced or revised as appropriate.

For listening practice we rely on Palgrave's Breakthrough Spanish 1. We are working on developing confidence in speaking.
