The Written Word

Book Club 1

We meet monthly on Wednesdays at 2.30 in Quayside Court. We meet to discuss one book from a list of books , the latest ones, recommended ones, travel books, historical novels and a classic. Our method of choosing books for the list is very democratic: at the end of each term we discuss suggestions from all the members of the group and then vote for the ones we want on the list. At our meetings everyone gets a chance to air his/her views on the book just read, before the floor is thrown open for discussion.

Every third month we have what is called Free Choice. This is where members discuss a book they have read that they would like to recommend to others in the book club.

Please Note: The meeting on 15 December has been moved to the 12th January 2011 when we will discuss A Prayer for Owen Meany.

Book Club 2

We meet on Thursdays at 2.00pm. The group is ten in number (no vacancies at present). We agree the list of books to be read at the first meeting of the U3A year, one for each subsequent meeting. The reading list for 2010-11 is shown below. We then discuss one book at each meeting, usually morphing from discussion of that book to books in general: who has read what and what they thought of it. This year, we are also reading around a topic (the city of Venice) at our last meeting; and intend to have a list of books for next year worked out by then, or largely so.

Cider with Rosie
The Kite Runner
The Woman in White
That’s Another Story- Julie Walters
Wolf Hall
Good Wives
Topic of “Venice”

Book Club 3

The group meets each month and discusses books chosen by the members. The list of books for the 2010-11 session will be finalised at the first meeting on Thursday 23 September at 14.00. The group has set a limit of 10 on its membership

Book Club 4

At the first meeting members will decide on the reading list. Subsequent meetings will discuss the reading materials agreed at the first meeting.

The group will be reading and discussing the themes of a selection of one-act plays borrowed from the Scottish Community Drama Association

Play Reading 2

This new group will spend the first few meetings reading and discussing the themes of a variety of short plays published by the Third Age Press and advertised as 'ideal for reading in groups, written by and for third-agers' and continue by reading the same one-act plays as Play Reading Group 1 which will be lent by the Scottish Community Drama Association.
